I am really pleased to see new Fire Cadet units launching in Grantham and Sleaford, giving local young people a practical, positive opportunity to build confidence, skills and a sense of responsibility.
The Fire Cadets programme does far more than introduce young people to the fire and rescue service. It helps them develop teamwork, resilience, and leadership skills that matter in everyday life, education, and future employment. It also connects them directly to their community in a structured, supportive environment.
Each unit will take up to 15 cadets. Those involved will take part in hands-on activities, learn about fire safety and wellbeing, and gain real-life skills that are hard to teach in a classroom alone. Just as importantly, it gives young people a place where they belong, where effort is recognised, and where confidence can grow.
Connor, a 15-year-old Fire Cadet from Lincolnshire, is an excellent example of what this programme can do. Since joining in 2024, he hasn’t missed a single cadet night. Last year, he was selected to represent Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue at the Remembrance Sunday parade at the Cenotaph in London, where he was trusted to lead the group and give commands. That level of responsibility does not come by accident; it comes from structured training, trust and belief in young people.
What also stands out is the support behind the scenes. Cadets are guided by trained instructors, including serving and former fire service staff and local volunteers. These are people giving their time and experience to help young people succeed, and that deserves recognition.
From a local perspective, this is precisely the sort of initiative we should be backing. It supports young people, strengthens community ties, and builds skills that benefit Grantham in the long term. It is preventative, positive and practical, all things we need more of.
If you live in or around Grantham or Sleaford and know a young person who would benefit from this, I strongly encourage you to take a look.

This is a great scheme, and I’m glad to see it coming to Grantham.
