Standing on the corner of Balmoral Drive and Penrhyn Way this week — right opposite Miller & Carter Steakhouse — the problem is obvious.

Speeding.

It’s a long-running issue in Grantham and across Lincolnshire. But certain spots — like this one, and the junction of Barrowby Gate and Winchester Road — are becoming genuine danger zones.

We’ve all heard the jokes lately. People are saying the British Touring Car Championship must be filming a new Grantham leg and comparing our roads to the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit. Funny? Maybe. But what’s not funny is the real fear local families are living with every day.

Residents have had their vehicles damaged. Parents are anxious about their children cycling or even walking down the street. And that’s not acceptable — not now, not ever.

âś… Community Speed Watch Is Coming

Earlier this year, I mentioned that we were considering launching a Community Speed Watch programme. I’m thrilled to say it’s happening — and it’s happening thanks to you.

  • 12 local volunteers have already stepped up to take part.
  • We’ve got training confirmed with the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership.
  • And thanks to the generosity of local businesses, we’ve now ordered all the kit we need — fully sponsored.

There’ll be a public handover and announcement soon, but for now, a huge thank you to everyone involved.

👮‍♂️ More Patrols, More Enforcement

This week, I also had a very constructive conversation with our local sector inspector from Lincolnshire Police. They take this issue every bit as seriously as we do, and they’ve committed to stepping up enforcement in our area.

You can expect to see more high-visibility patrols in the coming weeks.

But to make it work, we need your help.

🕵️ How You Can Help Catch Repeat Offenders

What the police need is what they call “local intelligence.” That means:

  • When is the speeding happening?
  • Is it at certain times of day or days of the week?
  • Are there particular vehicles involved? Makes, models, colours, even number plates if you have them?
  • Do you know who’s doing it?

If you can help with any of that, please get in touch privately — by message, text, WhatsApp, whatever works for you. I’ll pass it on directly to the police. No names, no fuss, and nothing shared publicly.

We believe this is a repeat issue involving the same few drivers if we can pinpoint who, when, and how — we can stop it.

đź’¬ This Is What Community Looks Like

We’re doing this together: residents, local businesses, volunteers, the Council, and the police. Because this is our neighbourhood. And everyone deserves to feel safe here — whether they’re walking to school, heading to work, or just enjoying the street they live on.

So if you’ve seen anything, say something. You might be the reason a dangerous driver gets caught before someone gets hurt.

Let’s fix this. Together.
