A newly-constructed salt barn at Willingham Hall highways depot, near Market Rasen, will provide ideal conditions for storing salt to be used for gritting the county’s roads during severe winter conditions.

The salt was previously stored outside under covers and the new barn can store twice as much in optimum, dry conditions. There are eight highways depots around Lincolnshire and seven now have this purpose-built storage.

Lincolnshire County Council’s fleet of gritters carried out their first test run of the year at the start of October.

Forty-three gritters took part from our depots at Sturton, Willingham, Manby, Horncastle, Ancaster, Thurlby, Chainbridge and Pode Hole on Saturday 3 October.

Our gritters treat 1,869 of roads in the county which represents just over a third of our entire road network of 5,500 miles.
